In 1745, conflict around Koil (Aligarh) pulled young Surajmal into external war-making. When Nawab Fateh Ali Khan sought help against an Afghan commander sent by the Delhi court, Surajmal backed him and dispatched forces. The death of Asad Khan and defeat of the royal expedition announced that Bharatpur would not remain a spectator of Doab politics.
